Weekly Write-Up: 4th September 2019

by Tom Ashford

Welcome to the SPF Weekly Write-Up, where each Wednesday we collect together the self-publishing news of the week so you don’t have to.

After a few weeks off: Audible holds off on its Captions program, and an update on everything SPF Live.

Audible Steps Back on its Captions Program…

…for major publishers, at least. Audible have agreed to hold off on including works by a group of major publishing houses in its Captions program until copyright and licensing issues are resolved. These issues have arisen because Audible’s Captions program allows listeners of certain audiobooks to read along with the story (albeit only a few lines at a time) – something which publishers believe infringes copyright as Audible only has the rights for the audio edition of the story, not the written one.

The program won’t involve every Audible book, but those outside of the major publishers’ remit are still eligible when Captions is officially launched on September 10th.

You can read more about it here.

What’s New for SPF?

Well for starters, the Self Publishing Show Live is almost certainly happening, and with any luck it’ll be in a particularly nice London venue too. Put March 9th 2020 in your calendars and be ready – with limited capacity, we predict it’ll sell out very quickly. You won’t want to miss some of the speakers we have lined up (to be announced soon).

In the meantime, we have some other events coming up! James Blatch and John Dyer will be in Vancouver, BC on Saturday 21st September, at the Tap & Barrel. Drop by from 18:00 for a drink and chat.

Shortly after that will be a similar evening of libations and discussion, this time in Tampa Bay, Florida… details of which will be announced soon. Keep an eye out and come along if you’re in the area!
