Hello, I'm Mark Dawson.
I’m going to make an educated guess: you’re here because you’re just finishing your first novel and you want to know how to sell it.
Or you’ve got one or two books published but your sales are too low.
Not long ago, I was in exactly the same situation.
I spent months writing my first independently published novel, The Black Mile. It was a labour of love, and I was convinced that it was good. I published it hoping that readers would find it and love it - and the rest would be history.
I couldn’t find readers. I couldn’t get reviews. I ran free promotions, but I had no way of contacting the readers who’d downloaded the book.
In the end, I realised that marketing was key: I would have to get involved in the marketing of the book myself.
My first efforts were hit-and-miss: at first, I spent hundreds of dollars on marketing that didn’t work. So I read books and blog posts and listened to podcasts. I tried and failed and tried again, and bit by bit I began to see results. I did more of the stuff that worked – and junked the stuff that didn’t.

In short, I’ve been fortunate enough to make my full-time living as an indie author since November 2014.
One of the questions I’ve been asked most frequently (aside from “Where do you get your ideas?”) is how I managed to do this in the dog-eat-dog world of publishing.
The short answer at the time was “social media”: those of you who follow me on Facebook know how powerful that platform can be. So in 2015, I branched out into teaching and released my acclaimed Facebook Ads for Authors course.

I had the millionth download of one of my books in October 2015. It’s closer to two million today.
But it wasn’t always like that.
Rewind to 2012. I published my first Kindle book and sold…nothing. I almost gave up. I knew that I could write, and I knew that readers who would love my books were out there. But how could I find them?
2013. I published The Cleaner, the first John Milton book. Readers were not exactly beating down my door. I nearly quit again. But I pressed on, learned everything I could, and wrote some more.
2014. The tipping point. My wife was on maternity leave with our second child, and I had to make it work. I built systems that would take care of the marketing for me, leaving me time to write. Using the simple methods I’ll teach you, I took a mailing list of 1,000 readers and grew it to 15,000. I went from making a few hundred dollars a month to five figures. I quit my job on 28 November. I liked my job, but I LOVE writing. And I LOVE being my own boss.
2015. I added social media ads to the mix and my business went stratospheric. I made more than $50,000 in April and sales continue to grow.
2016. My list expanded to 65,000. My final 2016 book launch hit the top #100 on Amazon and was #2 worldwide on Apple. I managed to secure a high six-figure income for the year.

I wrote my first novel in 2009 and published it in 2010. I shopped it around to agents first but no one wanted it. I ended up with something like 21 rejection letters. Not a ton, by any stretch, but enough to make me think about other options. I decided to self publish and went through a vanity press. After spending nearly $2000 to get the thing in print I only sold about 50 copies that year, ending up way in the hole. I almost didn’t write the second book in the series and only did so at the begging of a friend who loved the first one.
In 2012, I wrote the sequel and published it, along with a revised version of the first one, in December of that year. I also created two novellas as giveaways to get more readers. I knew what a lead magnet was before most other authors. But I had a problem. Traffic.
I had great lead magnets, good books, but my blog was getting less than five visits a day. I tried guest posting but that brought in the wrong kinds of leads. I tried some Facebook stuff but that didn’t work. Twitter didn’t help either. I was lucky because even without traffic, I was still selling 5-10 books a day and on really good days, 20-30. I always dreamed of writing novels full time but sales like that couldn’t support my standard of living or my family. I wrote and released new books, as is common advice, and sales increased slightly but not enough to quit my job. As time went by, I hated my job more and more and each day literally hurt my chest when I had to wake up and go in. I just knew I wasn’t doing what I was meant to do. But I was lost. I had less than 100 fiction subscribers and no idea how to get more.
The day I discovered Mark was the day my life changed. I started employing the strategies he was using. Suddenly, I started getting subscribers. At first it was only three or four a day, which sent me through the roof. I couldn’t believe I was getting four subscribers every day on autopilot! That’s 120 new readers every month when I’d been getting zero! Then I ramped up what Mark teaches and took that 3-4 subscribers to 30-40 a day. I launched a new book in March 2015 and had my biggest release yet. Then I did another one the following month with a result that was three times the March launch.
The sales and subscriber growth I experienced in just 90 days of using Mark’s techniques allowed me to walk into my boss’s office on May 28 2015 and tell her I was quitting my job. Mark’s course literally changed my life. I can’t put a price tag on that. I’ve struggled as a part time author for five years.
